The origin of the levadas dates back to the early days of the island’s colonization in the 15th century. It was then that the first levadas were built to irrigate the sugar cane plantations, enabling the production of what was then known as the „white gold“. Apart from sugar cane, the levadas were also very important to irrigate the vineyards that produced the island’s iconic and well-known ‚Madeira wine‘.
But even today this irrigation system is still active and is used in the cultivation of mango, avocado, banana, wine, etc.

Actually, my plan was an island crossing. But unfortunately strong storms were announced when I was already on my first campsite – Ribeiro do Frio. So I decided to do this levada hike back to Machico.

PR10 Levada Ribeiro Frio – Portela: The Levada Furado begins in Ribeiro Frio at an altitude of 860m and is one of the oldest levadas in Madeira.

PR5 Vereda das Funduras: Starts from the Portela viewpoint. The hike goes along the forest path of the Funduras mountains until it enters the beautiful laurel forest of Laurissilva.

LVC Levada do Canical: At Marcos the path continues on the LVC to Maccico. Here you can directly observe the irrigation.

Der Ursprung der Levadas geht bis in die frühen Tage der Kolonialisierung der Insel im 15. Jahrhundert zurück. Damals wurden die ersten Levadas errichtet, um die Zuckerrohrplantagen zu bewässern, was die Produktion von Zucker ermöglichte, der damals als das “weiße Gold” bekannt war. Von Zuckerrohr abgesehen, waren die Levadas ebenso sehr wichtig, um die Weinberge zu bewässern, welche den als Symbol für die Insel fungierenden und sehr bekannten “Madeira-Wein” hervorbrachten.
Doch auch heute ist dieses Bewässerungssystem noch aktiv und wird genutzt beim Anbau von Mango, Avocado, Banane, Wein, etc.

Eigentlich war mein Plan ein Inseldurchquerrung. Doch leider wurden starke Unwetter angekündigt als ich bereis auf meinem ersten Campingplatz – Ribeiro do Frio war. Deshalb entschloß ich mich zu dieser Levada Wanderung zurück nach Machico.

PR5 Vereda das Funduras: Beginnt am Aussichtspunkt von Portela. Die Wanderung geht auf dem Waldweg des Funduras Gebirges, bis sie in den schönen Lorbeerwald Laurissilva eintritt.

LVC Levada do Canical: Bei Marcos geht der Weg weiter auf dem LVC bis Maccico. Hier kann man direkt die Bewässerung beobachten.
